WE'VE CRACKED THE CASE!

To the left we have featured a picture of our Explorer and Connection Committee President, Denzel Honore. He's standing in front of an exhibit of the historical origins of the Old School House located in Hempstead New York. The exhibit was put on display at the African American Museum  in early August. Our Explorer Denzel would like to thank the Staff at Historihelpers Inc. and the African American Museum for all their support, and for believing in his vision. According to Denzel, "This project is far from done. We still have to pursue the Land marking and refurbishing of the structure in order to truly preserve its historical value."

Documented sources revealed that the Old School House was commissioned by a woman to be built  in the late 1800's.  A Hempstead resident who had since retired from the Hempstead Public School system and wanted to start her own school. After a couple of sales, the structure ended up in the hands of the wife of Mr. George Durkes Clark, who then donated it to the Hempstead School District in 1966.

Below are pictures of the award ceremony hosted by the African American Museum. In attendance were Mayor Don Ryan, Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Village Trustees, Members of the School Board, Denzel Honore and Dr. Diann Anthony of Historihelpers inc., Mr and Mrs. Pearse, Genealogy Specialist of the African American Museum, Deirdre Calley , Researcher and various members of the support staff at the African American Museum.

Commendations were given by Mayor Don Ryan and Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby to Denzel Honore on behalf of the Village and Town of Hempstead respectively.

Talks continue between the School Board and Historihelpers Inc.'s President Dr. Diann Anthony to move this project forward.

Stay tuned.
